Babcock Ranch will be the first city to provide for its energy needs from the sun via the largest solar photovoltaic energy facility generating system powering any city in the world.

This pure, clean, renewable and ecologically responsible method of creating energy from the sun is a perfect example of the leading edge technology that is the centerpiece of our remarkable new city.  Constructed and operated by FPL, an investor owned and publically regulated utility, Babcock Ranch’s photovoltaic facility will consist of an array of solar panels positioned on 321 acres of sun-drenched land and atop numerous commercial buildings throughout the city.  Solar facilities are not affected by the price volatility of fuel, and solar energy can help reduce our dependence on foreign sources of energy.  FPL’s Next Generation Solar Energy Center at Babcock Ranch is designed to produce more electricity than the city will consume, with an initial generating capacity of 50 to 74.9 megawatts.  The solar energy facilities will be expandable, able to grow as the needs of the community grow.  The benefits to the environment are unsurpassed:  the solar energy facilities release zero greenhouse gas emissions, have zero use of cooling water, and this source of energy is virtually inexhaustible.
