What a difference a year makes. When the 2005 Florida legislature adjourned, it appeared all hopes of preserving Babcock Ranch had come to an end. Few would have predicted that on the final day of the 2006 session, they would be securing the future of the Ranch by approving the largest land acquisition in State history.
Theodore Roosevelt once said, “Neither man nor nation can prosper unless, in dealing with the present, thought is steadily taken for the future.” The preservation of Babcock Ranch demonstrates that when thought for the future is paired with action, history is made.
The sale of approximately 73,000 acres of Babcock Ranch for permanent preservation could not have been achieved without the countless individuals and organizations who shared the vision and worked to make it a reality. From environmental organizations, community leaders and lawmakers to Governor Jeb Bush, the Florida Cabinet and State agency leaders – all lent unwavering support as we worked together to assure Babcock Ranch remains an important and historic part of Florida.
I am truly honored to have played a role in assuring this environmental treasure is preserved for generations to come. I am equally enthusiastic about the opportunity to set a new standard for responsible growth as we work to create an innovative, self-sustaining, environmentally friendly community that future generations of Southwest Floridians will be able to call home.
